Six out of 50 ships on Greenpeace list sold for scrap in only two months...

Amsterdam, 14th march 2002 - The total amount of ships on the Greenpeace-list actually going for scrap now numbers six, out of the 50 nominated ships in the spotlight. Five ships listed on the Greenpeace-website have recently arrived in Asia.

* Greek-owned ultra large crude carrier Kapetan Giorgis (built 1976) has made her final voyage to Pakistan.
* The Greek owned oil tanker Athenian Valour has also arrived in Pakistan. The 1977-built tanker, which attained US$135 per ldt in Pakistan, is owned by Athenian Sea Carriers. The company is rapidly disposing its older tonnage ships and has placed an order for six new ships.
* The Luxembourg owned oil tanker Flandre, the Italian owned oil tanker Valle Bianca, the Greek owned oil tanker Artemis II have made their final voyage to Chittagong, Bangladesh.

Greenpeace has once again urged the owners of these ships to ensure that the ships arrive at the Asian beaches without hazardous materials and to disclose an arrival inventory of remaining hazardous materials on board the ships when delivered to Asia. Some of the companies have told Greenpeace that the tankers would arrive gas free for hot works. So far Greenpeace has not received any other answer from the ship owners to confirm that other proper measures have been taken to prevent environmental damage and human casualties. Greenpeace holds the companies responsible for environmental damage and injuries to the workers in Asia.
