Four ships-for-scrap on Greenpeace list heading for Asian beaches

Amsterdam, 1 february 2002 - Only two weeks after launching the Greenpeace list of 50 soon-to-be-scrapped ships, four of these ships are currently making their final voyage: Valle Bianca, Flandre, Artemis II and Costa Riviera. We repeated our demands for decontamination prior to export for scrapping of the ship to the owners of the ships.

Greenpeace requests the shipping community for more information on the following ships:
  • Oil tanker Valle Bianca was sold for US $1.13 million by Italian based company Montanari. The tanker which operated in the Mediterranean area, was last spotted in the Suez Canal in mid-january. The tanker is expected to arrive on the beach of Chittagong (Bangladesh) soon.
  • Oil tanker (VLCC) Flandre has been sold to Bangladeshi breakers last week. The owner Euronav is based in Luxembourg.
  • Oil tanker Artemis II was sold recently by her Greek owner to Polembros Shipping to Bangladesh for US $ 2.89 million.
  • Passenger ship Costa Riviera was recently sold to India for around US $1.7 million. The owner is the Italian company Costa Crociere, said to be the second large cruise firm worldwide.
The owners of these ships have not yet replied to the letter Greenpeace has sent. We assume that the companies have not taken the necessary steps to prevent damage to the environment and health of the workers in Asia. Greenpeace holds owners responsible for all environmental damage and injuries to workers due to scrapping of these ships. As a matter of absolute urgency, we have requested to make sure that the ships will be gas free for hot works, in order to save lives of the shipyard workers.

It was only a few weeks ago (January 3rd) that shipping magazine Fairplay reported that three workers have died as a result of an explosion during the cutting of a vessel at a breaking yard near Chittagong, Bangladesh. According to Fairplay "Ezahar Miah, 25, died instantly when his torch ignited gases inside the 15,000 DWT tanker NT Yahia at the Brothers Associates shipbreaking yard at Sitakunda. Two other cutters later succumbed to injuries at a Chittagong hospital. Hundreds of other workers were working on the vessel at the time of the explosion, but no further injuries are reported."
