India
Mr Nagarsheth is president of the Iron Steel Scrap & Shipbreakers Association
of India. He attended the ship recycling summit in June 2001 in Rotterdam.
He stated that shipowners should remove all hazardous items not required
for the final voyage. All ships built after 1980 should replace tin-based
paint, asbestos, freon and other hazardous materials where alternatives
are available.
China
In September 2001 Mr Huang Zhao-Li attended the ship recycling conference
in Philadelphia. He is Secretary General of China National Ship-scrapping
Association. His opinion on shipbreaking: “At the full cycle of
a ship, ship owners should derive their main income from the 'shipping
life'. Shipowners should consider clean recycling as a very top priority
over a few more dollars in the book. A proper and safe disposal of toxic
materials on board should be arranged prior to the sale and export of
these ships".
